ABOUT

Alexa Rosenberg has been described as an “intuitive and creative performer,” with “a rich plummy voice.” As a lyric mezzo, she easily transforms into the wide range of characters that opera repertoire has to offer. She excels in anything from romantic leads to pants roles to slapstick comedy. She is also devoted to new works and the exploration of music written before 1750 and is her happiest when involved in projects centering on that repertoire.

This season, she joined the ensemble Music at Co-Cathedral (MACC) in which she will perform Joby Talbot's Path of Miracles and Bach's Christmas Oratorio. Last season, Alexa was a soloist in Marshall Opera's inaugural concert, premiered The Climate Operas with American Opera Projects, and workshopped a new opera, A Prize for Every Player by Aaron Siegel and A.M. Homes. She has also been a part of the development of The Why Collective's Transport, combining Another Sunrise by Jake Heggie and Judas Maccabaeus by Handel to tell the story of Jewish resistance.

Last season, Alexa performed the role of Sesto in Handel's Giulio Cesare with the Historical Performance Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She also performed a solo recital featuring Rossini, Lizst and Bordese's musical interpretations of Joan of Arc, as well as shared many forgotten gems of cabaret repertoire. In July, Alexa returned to NYC to sing the role of Sor Rafaela in Carla Lucero's professional premiere of Juana with dell'Arte Opera Ensemble. Parterre described Alexa in this performance as having  "clever comic instincts and,....an increasingly nuanced sound."

In 2021, Alexa took on the complex and brooding role of Ottone in a virtual production of L'incoronazione di Poppea. In 2019, she sang in SongFest concerts curated by Javier Arrebola, Amy Burton and John Musto. She also covered the role of Carmen while singing Mercedes at the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival.

Alexa has performed works ranging from Monteverdi to world premieres written just for her. She has sung with a variety of companies in NYC including Utopia Opera, Amore Opera, Bronx Opera and more. Her favorite roles include Hänsel, Carmen and Mercedes, Nicklausse and Bradamante.

Before focusing entirely on opera, she studied acting at the Stella Adler Acting Studio and at the Atlantic Theater School, which were vital to her growth into the artist she is today. She is passionate about communication and telling stories, and aspires to do so through her musicianship and acting training.

Outreach is a growing part of the opera world and Alexa is working toward becoming a major part of that movement. Alexa works with incarcerated populations to bring some beauty and humanity within cinderblock walls. Through her studies at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, she became involved in the acting and playwriting classes the studio provided to NYC jails, including Rikers Island. She eventually created her own opera immersion class, bringing in classical pieces and connecting them to pop culture, politics, and moral issues we all face. Experiencing success with that model, she decided to start a non-profit, Arias Beyond Boundaries. Arias Beyond Boundaries provides live opera, discussion and connection throughout the NYC jail system with a network of talented and compassionate teaching artists. Alexa also provides one-on-one lessons and dramatic coachings(more information here)

Alexa completed her graduate studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with the Presidential Scholarship. Since moving back to NYC, she studies with Matthew Anchel.

Alexa is a writer, NYC lover, fan of all cats and major goofball. Follow her daily journey on instagram at @alexaraerosenberg, and check out her blog.
